Un amico scovato in rete con cui non comunicavo da circa un anno, quando era lui a cercare squadra in Europa. Ora me lo ritrovo dall’altro capo del mondo a fare Presidente, vice allenatore e portiere dei Trinidad and Tobago Highlanders FC
Si chiama James Baird, scozzese di Edimburgo e sta facendo nascere un progetto molto ambizioso!
Ha giocato da portiere per 11 anni come professionista e la sua carriera lo ha portato in squadre come Hearts, Hibs, Livingston, Alloa, Stenhousemuir, Ayr United, TB, Blackpool, Tobago United, MB1905, Joe Public, North East Stars, and AFC Totton( Southampton).
Ha anche giocato con l’Under 21 Scozzese girando tutto il mondo.
James, Quando è partito il progetto?
Il progetto è partito nel febbraio del 2011 e siamo molto eccitati per questo! Abbiamo messo insieme una grande squadra di collaboratori, allenatori e uomini d’affariper essere quanto più preparati e professionali.
Come sei coinvolto nel Club?
Attualmente ho più ruoli. Sono il proprietario con mia moglie Debby , nonchè allenatore in seconda e portiere. Sapendo che dirigere da solo il gruppo non sarebbe stata una cosa semplice per ora aiuto l’allenatore Alexander che è un “Trinidadian” con un sacco d’esperienza con i giovani calciatori e cestisti. Come giocatore, avendo solo 27 anni posso dire di avere ancora qualche anno da giocare ma allo stesso tempo posso contribuire alla crescita e alla maturazione dei calciatori più giovani. L’obiettivo è quello di avere non più di 3-4 giocatori anziani e il resto della squadra composta da ragazzi sotto i 21 anni.
Quando si svolgeranno i provini?
Abbiamo una buona rete di osservatori e visionato molti giocatori, ma nell’ultima settimana di gennaio abbiamo svolto già i primi provini.
Avete giocatori o allenatori stranieri nello staff?
Come già detto il nostro allenatore è di sicura esperienza e sta lavorando molto bene sui talenti locali per le varie scuole e club professionistici locali .
In questo momento l’unico straniero sono io, che ho giocato in Europa per 11 anni; probabilmente sono uno dei giocatori più rappresentativi ma probabilmente arriveranno 5 giocatori giovani dei quali non posso ancora fare il nome fino a quando non hanno firmato il contratto.
Di cosa necessita il club a livello materiale?
Stiamo cercando ora di avere kit di maglie, palloni e materiale tecnico in generale attraverso forme di donazione e autofinanziamenti sperando nel lungo termine di avere i nostri ritorni. ma il più è crescere e dare la possibilità ai giovani calciatori di inserire Trinidad&Tobago nella loro carta geografica!
Che agevolazioni ottiene uno sponsor del club?
Qualsiasi sponsor potenziale avrà una pagina nel sito internet della squadra, visibilità ai bordi del campo, che dipenderanno dalla lega in cui saremo inseriti cosiccome la copertura televisiva con cui si avrà una visibilità mediatica di tutto rispetto.Ogni mese pubblicheremo il programma del club con sponsors e caratteristiche dei giocatori che avranno in evidenza lo sponsor. . Ovviamente il kit di gara presenterà gli sponsor o lo sponsor del caso.
Quali sono gli obiettivi prioritari del Club?
Immediatamente creare una squadra forte e competitiva. Non appena sarà possibile vorremmo mettere in evidenza i nostri giovani talenti.
Da cosa si differenzia il tuo Club dagli altri nel campionato?
Abbiamo inizialmente differenti traguardi. Vogliamo creare giovani talenti e dare loro opportunità in Europa; vorremmo anche che la squadra giocasse nella U.S.L. (United States League), o nella Lega Nord Americana, ma ciò dipende molto dalle fonti economiche che avremo a disposizione! Abbiamo anche molti contatti con Club e Agenti Inglesi.
Successivamente cercheremo di diffondere il movimento nell’area locale, nelle scuole, e coinvolgere sempre di pù le istituzioni locali.
L’ultima cosa che voglio dire va oltre la “produzione” di calciatori giovani o adulti. Noi speriamo di dare a questi potenziali giocatori che preleviamo dalle Accademie e dalle altre squadre uno spirito e un’educazione tale da avere una soddisfacente carriera in qualsiasi cosa vogliano fare nel calcio o in qualsiasi altra mansione dello sport.
In ogni club non ci sono solo i giocatori ma anche i magazzinieri, i giardinieri, i fisioterapisti e i tifosi; quindi chi non ha le capacità per essere un “calciatore” ha probabilmente i mezzi per essere coinvolto in altri ruoli.

A friend found on web I didn’t communicate to since 10 months ago, when he was still searching an Europeean, Italian club to play for; now I discovered him to be in the other side of the world as Owner, assistant Coach and Goalkeeper of Trinidad and Tobago Highlanders FC!
His name is James Baird, Scottish fron Edimburgh, and he has a very ambitious project!
He played for 11 years as a pro still playing as well too, his career has taken him to Hearts, Hibs, Livingston, Alloa, Stenhousemuir, Ayr United, TB, Blackpool, Tobago United, MB1905, Joe Public, North East Stars, and AFC Totton( Southampton).
He has also played up to under 21’s with Scotland and played all over the globe , goalkeeper.
1. James, how did the club get started?
Well the Club will start Feb 2011 and we are all very excited about it, we have been puting together a great background team and coaches and buisness people so we can reall be a good side and be professional.
2. How are you involved in the club?
Well i have a few roles actaully, I am owner with my wife Debby , as well as been Assitant coach/player. I knew that being head coach would be too much so i will assist Coach Alexander who is a Trinidadian with a lot of experience with youth in soccer and basketball. As well as been a player in the team as i am still only 27 so i have a few years on the clock , so this should provide the younger players a good older head. I will also draft in mabye 3-4 more older guys as the rest of the team will be made up of under 21 players.
3. When are the tryouts?
We have a good scouting network and have identified many players, but we will hold tryouts mabye in last week of january.
4. Do you have any standout players/coaches on board?
Well as i mentioned our coach is a very experience coach and is been doing an excellent job locally in developing talent for various school and pro clubs.
Player wise ,at this point in time we have obviously myself who played in europe for 11 years so, i will probably be one of the most recognised players but we have mabye 5 great young prospects but i will not mention names untill all the signing is completed.
if so who, and what are their previous accomplishments?
5. What does the club need in the way of support?
We are looking just now at getting team kits, balls and equiptment, as well as any monatary donantions as it will be a costly venture but we hope in the long term we will make our money back. But its more about developing talent and giving younger player the oppertunity to put Trinidad and Tobago on the map.
6. What are the benefits of a sponsorship with the club?
Any potential sponsor will get a page on the club website, we can arrange match boards, depending on which league we go in we can also mabye get Tv coverage. On a montjly basis we hope to do club program with sponsors and player details, and each player will have a sponsor for kit. The match kit will also have a sponsors name on it.
7. What are the immediate goals for the club?
Our immediate goals are to make the club succesful and as competative as we can as quickly as possible enabling the talented playes the oppertubity to showcase themselfs.
8. How do you all plan to distinguish the club from others in the league?
Well firstly we have different goals, we want to produce young talent and hopefully give them the oppertunity in Europe , we also want the team to be playing in the USL or north american leagues asap, money depending as this would give them the biggest oppertunity. We will aslo have heavy links with Uk club and agents .
Lastly we hope to bring the community on board and do thinsg in the local areas, help in painting schools, meet kids in schools, really get the players involved as thats what its all about.
Last thing i want to say is , this is more about producing good young adults than anything else we hope to give these youngesters from the academy and the team the skills to have a succesful career in whatever they want to do weather they wantto play or get involved in other parts of sports. Remember this every team also needs a kitman, grass cutter,physion,supporter so mabye you dont have the skills to play but you do have the skills to be involved.
